Why You Should Buy ‘The Big Issue’ This Christmas

I’m sure most of you will have heard of the Big Issue or at least seen the people who sell them on the streets. It is a fairly common sight in most major cities/towns and generally, those who sell the magazine are homeless or vulnerably housed.

I saw the lady who is usually out in the cold selling the magazine a few weeks back, whilst I was on my lunch break at work and I just had the urge to buy one. To be honest, I feel so bad when I walk past and don’t buy one because I feel we are all guilty of the “sorry, I have no change” or the usual, “no thank you” comments and I was no different. Most of us never really acknowledge the individuals selling the Big Issue, we tend to cross the road or try and avoid eye contact to stop an awkward smile and shrug as we quickly walk by. This poor lady was probably absolutely freezing, considering it’s the middle of winter and everyone is wrapped up in coats and scarves, standing in the same place for hours on end trying to sell magazines really doesn’t sound like my idea of fun. It’s time to stop being selfish and making excuses and pull out that £2 or £3 you most likely have in your purse or pocket and buy one. I’m not forcing you, but you’ll feel much better for it, I promise; part of the money goes to the sellers (or vendors as the company calls them) and the rest goes to printing the following week’s issue.

Thought you knew about the buying and selling of the Big Issue? Think again, read more about how it works here.

Now, because most of us don’t buy the Big Issue then you probably don’t have much of a clue of what is inside. You’ll be glad to know it’s a surprisingly good read. There’s plenty of celebrity interviews, advice and a little know-how of what the business (Big Issue isn’t a charity!) is all about.

They did well with the getting on board with the current trends, most people will know about Star Wars because it’s pretty much been shoved in our faces the last few years! I have to say I wasn’t really a fan but once persuaded I watched the latest films and I actually enjoyed them. I went to the Last Jedi with my family a few days before Christmas and it was up there with one of my favourites! Back to the magazine, the edition from a few weeks back included an interview with Mark Hamill aka Luke Skywalker and it’s an insightful read.

The edition closest to Christmas with the Santa on the front cover had some very lovely Christmassy ideas with advice and positive messages that make the purchase of the magazine feel 100% worthwhile.

So next time you’re out an about, why not stop for a quick chat with your local vendor and considering buying the Big Issue – I did, so why not you?

Until next time,
