Brace yourselves for a long post! Animal testing and cruelty-free products are something that I feel strongly about so if you aren’t ready – prepare yourselves for a lesson in all things beauty and skincare.
(If you are just here for the brands – the full list of companies is at the bottom) * Please note all content in this post was up to date at the time of posting.
I’ve much more aware of the actions that occur in the beauty industry when it comes to producing makeup and skin care products for consumers to buy.
As I said in my previous post (Vitamin E Skincare) I’ve decided to use up the remaining health and beauty products that I own and as I finish them, they will be replaced with cruelty-free alternatives.
It’s a pretty daunting area to throw yourself into because many companies don’t specify what their animal testing policy is. Despite an EU law being passed in March 2013 which bans the sale of animal-tested products in Europe, many companies have managed to create a loophole around this. L’Oreal is a well-known company for animal testing; for example brands will state things like:
“L’Oréal no longer tests on animals any of its products or any of its ingredients, anywhere in the world. Nor does L’Oréal delegate this task to others. An exception could only be made if regulatory authorities demanded it for safety or regulatory purposes.”
Unfortunately, this statement about safety purposes means they test on animals. This is because they sell their products in China, therefore it immediately means they HAVE TO test.
Newsflash: If a company sells in China, they are testing on animals.
Even after clearing stating on their website “the Group no longer tests on animals anywhere in the world and does not delegate this task to others.” They go on to contradict themselves: “An exception could be made if regulatory authorities required it for safety or regulatory purposes.“
So let’s move on to the cruelty-free alternatives.
These three logos are your life savers. Look out for these on health and beauty products to help indicate whether or not they are cruelty-free. Watch out for any other symbols that look similar because they aren’t legitimate.
I get a lot of my facts and information from beauty bloggers who dedicate their time contacting companies to ask about their animal testing policy. I definitely recommend you have a look at their blogs!
